Downtown Fergus Falls is becoming fashionable again with the opening of a new women’s clothing and accessory store at the end of this week.

“It’s a definite need here, and I’ve always wanted to have my own clothing store,” said Stephanie Ellingson, who will open The bric at 10 a.m. Friday.

Ellingson got her start in Fergus Falls when she opened Periwinkle in 2000, but that store has moved locations several times, first to Perham and now to Ottertail.

Many people in town had asked her if she was going to be coming back, Ellingson said, and by next week, she will have.

Her two stores, Periwinkle and The bric, have different focuses.“Perkinkle started with mainly vintage, and gradually grew new,” Ellingson said. “Periwinkle focuses more on the lake country and the lake tourists.”

The bric, however, will focus more on women’s fashion.

“Here we’re doing all women’s clothing, accessories, shoes and furniture,” Ellingson said.

Starting another businesses in Fergus Falls is something that has been on her mind for the last few years.

In the last few months the opportunity opened up for her.

“It was just like, let’s do it, and we did,” Ellingson said.

A businesses owner for the past 15 years, she came from a family that was business orientated.

“When we were kids we sold fireworks and Christmas trees,” Ellingson said. “I’ve worked a lot of retail.”

Sharri Martyn, the manager for The bric, first began working for Periwinkle several years back.

“There’s a lot of young people here,” Martyn said. “There is a lot of potential.”

Ellingson said she hopes to see more small businesses downtown, as she sees a helpful climate toward small businesses in town.

“There’s lots of potential,” she said about the growth of small businesses in Fergus Falls.

They’ve been working since the end of January to prepare for opening day.
